Dr. Heather Bartlett is a Board Certified Family Medicine who completed her residency as Chief Resident in 2011. She founded and opened her private practice in February 2016. After years of working closely with patients, she decided she needed to innovate again in January 2020. Here's why.
Once she got to know her patients, she realized the common hypothesis in most medicine is not true.
The idea that most patients are "non-compliant" is simply not true and that cannot be the only logical reason why metabolic change rarely occurs.
After she knew her patients well and saw what they were doing under the standard American medical approach -- treating with blood pressure medications, cholesterol lowering medications, etc. -- it didn't make sense that their labs were not improving.
And worse, her patients didn't feel any better, a common complaint that too often goes by the way side. Back then she also gave the only answers she was taught: move more, eat less, restrict your calories.
And then she decided something was not making biochemical sense. She needed to investigate.
So she spent the time and energy and invested in learning more about what could be impacting millions of people across America -- and even the world.
And so she investigated. Implemented. And showed profound results with her private practice patients.
But there was one caveat to that.
Over time, she realized that simply telling people what to do was not sufficient for long term success and the real goal -- lifestyle transformation -- and thereby, long term health optimization.
Individuals need to understand. They need to learn about their own body. Reflect on what they have done in the past, to what level of commitment, and for what purpose.
Why? Because metabolic disease is stressful, sneaky, and for some, a decades-long struggle. And having any metabolic disease while living in America is downright disheartening and an uphill battle -- a metabolic mountain that, if an individual is left alone, cannot be summited.
Without this acknowledgement and personal investment, a paint-by-number scenario for health fails most individuals with metabolic disease.
Because Dr. Bartlett believes that a person's health should be a fish bowl
(transparent, clear, plain) rather than a black box
(hidden, mysterious, unknown), she needed to innovate to make this possible.
She knew she couldn't look to standard ways of delivering information to future clients.
She also realized she literally could not be everyone's doctor. Impossible.
But more importantly, she had another epiphany.
She needed to be more than just a doctor -- she needed to be educator and coach.
Because information, understanding, and integration all lead to implementation and transformation.
Limitations as only a clinician:
Face-to-face visits are far too short and they would be too costly for the number of visits needed to really understand this information.
Studies show patients can only retain 10% of information given to them in a 15 minute visit.
So clearly that's not of benefit.
Face-to-face visits are also inconvenient: Missed work. Driving time. Childcare. Weather.
Many people already have a doctor -- all they need is more information and education.
And that's when she created her Metabolic Online Course.
